Once in a lifetime (or maybe twice, if we're lucky), projects like this one land into our Studio; to join the project team to plan, design, build and fitout a dream home for a dream family, on the beautiful island of Jersey, UK.
Part of a large private estate on the Channel Islands with beautiful sea views, the residence is surrounded by acres of lush countryside where horses roam free, a picturesque setting for this impressive property, with the views from all aspects playing a key in the design.
The 9,500 square foot home runs over four stories and includes a private cinema, gym and bespoke cellar bar. It is the home of a lifetime for a family with XX children. Our client wanted a sophisticated urban aesthetic to this home and we were inspired by our experience working on a luxury and elegant Knightsbridge London townhouse, but with scale, and crucially, breath-taking scenic views. This design direction was appropriate for the clients, the location and the heritage of the area.
Having inputted on the overall layout, the final plans show generous room sizes prescribed for functional living in a well-connected, well-portioned home, and each room flows into the next effortlessly.
There is a classic and understated architectural backdrop throughout, with high coffered ceilings, elegant coving and detail skirting, and a dark oak is used on external and interior doors to great, schematic effect. These features add important layers and maturity to an interior. With a young family running throughout, we married classic and contemporary, so the home feels timeless yet personal.
The large entrance hall is strikingly finished, a signature and significant feature of our work, where first impressions, a warm welcome and a statement look greet all visitors to a home. The curvature on the staircase is emphasised by the dark, perimeter band framing around the marble floor. Wall panelling, opulent lighting and sophisticated furnishing complete the showcase.
The left side of the house is the more informal family side, with a large, double island, sleek and modern kitchen, complete is elegant island dining with magnificent coastal views. A large family living area and children’s play area, both with custom back-lit designed joinery, are important social and living spaces for the young family.
Our clients had clear-cut ideas for their ideal Master Suite, and our role was to ensure they got everything they wished for. Complete with separate His and Hers dressing rooms and His and Hers marble ensuites, the Master Suite has floor to ceiling picture windows overlooking the Jersey countryside, and a cosy living area lets this couple enjoy sweeping sunsets, while relaxing after a long day.
It was a pleasure to design two separate Ensuites, where we could fulfil the dream bathrooms for both parties! A bright, white veined marble scheme includes a free-standing bath. In the second of the two ensuites, we created a masculine feel, with grey marble tiles paired with dark, ebony woodwork. LED lights, bronze fittings and time and large mirrors finish the room perfectly.
The surprise element for all guests in visiting this home is the basement, complete with sleek Wine Bar and Cellar, an atmospheric full home cinema, and a home gym. This sunken level was a joy to design, with the clients open to very modern and moody ideas for the interiors. It's a dream den, where everyone comes to play.
The feel for this house is of elegance and charm. There is sophistication in key areas, the Foyer, the living room, and the Master Suite, where adults can entertain and unwind. There are also many spaces for the whole family to enjoy. We know this house will be a happy home far into the future, with a timeless interior to last alongside.
